An elephant advocacy group held a vigil in memory of Watoto, Woodland Park Zoo’s only African elephant, on Saturday, one day after she was euthanized.

The group, Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants, gathered to mourn the death of Watoto while protesting the conditions of the zoo’s two Asian elephants, Bamboo and Chai.

About 50 people gathered along North 50th Street, holding signs, before placing flowers at the entrance of the zoo. Zoo security guards kept watch over the protestors as they gathered at the gates for the vigil. Small groups of protesters eventually entered the zoo but had to leave their signs and pamphlets outside.

"(Watoto) was only 45 years old," said a press release from the group. "In the wild she would have been in the prime of her life; still bearing calves. Watoto joins a long list of elephants in zoos who have died decades before their expected lifespans of 60 – 70 years."

Staff said they believe the death was due to old age, but Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants believe the zoo’s conditions were responsible for an early demise.

"Confinement in Woodland Park Zoo’s 1986 exhibit causes what Scientific American calls: ‘tortuous conditions [which] inflict serious physical and psychological damage on such smart and sensitive animals,’ " said the Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants release. "Watoto suffered from a host of chronic and painful captivity related diseases. Her stereotypical behaviors of pacing and swaying were the mind’s way of coping with trauma and crushing boredom."
